StarterStarter applicationA Boostcap module has been used to crank a 1520 kW (2400 HP) Pielstick diesel motor which equips the BB67000 locomotives belonging to the SCNF, the French railway national company. Today the storage device consists of a 72 Volts Ni-Cd battery of 140 Ah with a weight of 500 kg. The test has been performed in the SNCF maintenance site of "Quatres-Mares" in the neighborhood of Rouen. The supercapacitor bank was made of 32 series connections of 6 parallel capacitors rated at 800 F, 2.5 VDC and a series resistance smaller than 2 mOhm. The complete bank presented a capacitance of 150 F, a series resistance of 10 mOhm and a nominal voltage of 80 V. To fulfill all the requirements the double-layer capacitor module is connected in parallel with a battery which shows about a third of the size of the original one. The 60 kg module has provided a peak current of 2060 A. It does mean about 350 A for each pieces. The peak power delivered into the starter, limited by the load resistance, was 107 kW, which corresponds to a power density of 1.5 kW/kg. The Ni-Cd battery delivers only a peak current of 1640 A in the same conditions, which corresponds to a power density of 0.1 kW/kg. The cranking has been also performed only with supercapacitors in 4 seconds. Moreover the test has shown that if the fuel injection is blocked, the supercapacitors are able to supply a cranking current longer than 15 seconds (the experiment is interrupted in order not to burn the coil). The full charging time of the supercapacitor bank is shorter than 2 minutes. With a battery, the corresponding required time is longer than 1 hour. Source: Garmanage: Roland Gallay
